What is this?

This visualization is exploring the effects of Facebook likes, IMDb scores, and budgets on a movie’s gross earnings. The earnings are in dollars on the y axis and then the x axis shows the movies budget by default. However, by clicking on the icons on the left you can change the x-axis to either IMDb score or the total Facebook likes of the cast. The total likes of the cast means it is the sum of the top three actors in films Facebook likes. Additionally, each circle’s size and color are relative to its earnings. So, the darker and larger bubbles mean more earnings. By hovering over each bubble you can see more details about the film, and clicking on the bubble will send you to that movies IMDb page.

We can see that a movie with a larger budget tends to also gross more money. However, having a high IMDb score doesn’t seem to matter too much when it comes to earnings. In fact, it looks like some of the highest earning movies don’t make it past a score of 8. What’s truly interesting is that it seems that the popularity of the cast (Facebook likes) does not matter at all when it comes to earnings.
