As a finance major, I wanted to choose a dataset that had financial information that I could analyze. Since I go to college in San Francisco, I thought it would be interesting to visualize the city's financial budget. I want to primarily learn where the city gets it's funds, how it generates revenue, and where it spends it's generated revenue.

To understand the core visualizations that analyze how each orgnaizational group or department generate revenue, use funds, or spend the revenue, you first need to understand the hierachy. Therefore, below is an overview of the San Francisco oganizational and department hierarchy. There are 7 organizational groups and each group has a collection of departments. Hover over each node to view the organization or department.

The dataset used for this project is from the San Francisco Controller's office database. The dataset contains annual budgetary information from 2010 and onwards with new data added every fiscal year. There are 22 columns and over 125,000 rows. Columns include information about revenue and spending relating to the orgnaizations, departments, programs, funds, financial expense accounts, etc. You can get a csv of the current original dataset by exporting the data from here. All of the visualizations in this project use a subset of the data and the amount of revenue or spending has been adjusted to inflation.
