This stacked bar chart shows the top 10 types of funds that SF organizations use to fund their activities from fiscal year 2010-2016. All San Francisco city and county organizations use the general fund with Public Protection organization using the most of it. This is because the generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) requires governments to allocate a general funds account for most expenses. After doing further research on the general funds, I found that the portions of SF's general fund are specifically set aside for policy initiatives, programs, and staffing needs that current and past policymakers and voters think are important. It makes sense that the top 3 orgnaizations that use the general fund the most are orgnaizations focusing on public good in terms of health, housing, and safety. More information on the analysis of the general fund can be found here.
Similarly, the special revenue funds account is used by almost all orgnaizations. This is because San Francisco sets aside funds that must be used for a specific project and provides an extra level of accountability and transparency to taxpayers so they know their taxes are going towards the correct projects.
Furthermore, it's interesting to see how the Public Works Transportation and Commerce orgnaization uses the most amount of types of funds in this list of top 10 funds but that's because 4 of the funds directly have to do with transportation and commerce. In addition, this visualization shows that last 7 funds are being completely used by one organization since each fund is directly related to their particular orgnaization.
